- ZTREEWIN :- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- --------------------------------------
-
- Q1: How do I set the window size of ZTreeWin permanently?
- A: The size of the window is determined by the text-mode of ZTree (eg. 50x80)
- and the Font being used (when running in a window).
- Use Alt-F9 (or Alt-F10 for a permanent change) to change the ZTree
- text-mode. To change the Font used in windowed mode, you must edit the
- screen properties of the shortcut used to invoke ZTreeWin (see Q2).
-
- Q2: I went to change the screen properties of my ZTree shortcut, but the
- options are not available.
- A: If your shortcut points to ZTW.EXE, it should instead point to ZTWIN.BAT
- in order to display the advanced shortcut settings (see also Q4).
-
- Q3: After running programs from ZTree, why does the window shrink?
- A: When the window in which ZTree is running uses a Font setting of AUTO,
- the window will shrink when Ztree closes. To prevent this, set a fixed
- font in the shortcut settings (see also Q4).
-
- Q4: How do I make Alt-Q exit to the current directory in a command prompt?
- A: For this to work, it is necessary to invoke ZTree from ZTWIN.BAT.
- ZTWIN.BAT is created in the ZTree directory the first time you quit ZTree.
-
- Q5: I edited my ZTWIN.BAT, but every time I quit ZTree, my changes are gone!
- A: ZTWIN.BAT is rewritten each time you quit, to support Alt-Q (see also Q4).
-
- Q6: I pressed 'maximize' on the toolbar, now ZTreeWin is Fullscreen - how do
- I get back in a window?
- A: Note that this toolbar is a function of Windows, not ZTreeWin.
- To return ZTreeWin to windowed mode, press Alt-Enter.
-
- Q7: After I upgraded from Win9x to Win98/ME/2K/XP, ZTreeWin stopped working.
- A: Delete the existing ZTreeWin desktop shortcut, and create a new one to
- point to your ZTWIN.BAT.
-
- Q8: When I try to use the archiving functions (Ctrl-F5 or Alt-F5), nothing
- seems to happen.
- A: This most often means that a third-party external archiving program could
- not be found. ZTree invokes the archiving program through a command shell,
- so it is necessary to have these programs in a directory in the PATH.
- Make sure your TMP directory is valid and has some free space on the drive.
-
- Q9: How do I make 'TurboZip' (or whatever) the default archiver?
- A: Edit ARCHIVER.BB2, and move the lines for your preferred default archiver
- to the top of the file. Be sure to save a backup of ARCHIVER.BB2 in case
- it should become 'messed up'!
-
- Q10:How do I manage 'spanned' archives with ZTreeWin?
- A: ZTreeWin can be used to create a spanned (multi-volume) archive if the
- archiver selected does this by default for removable media (eg. PKZip 2.50)
- or you manually add the required parameters to the archive command line
- before actually launching the archiver.
- ZTreeWin cannot be used to open a spanned archiver at this time, but
- support for it is coming.
-
- Q11:Why does the screen blink after I invoke an external program?
- A: This is a known restriction in ZTreeWin caused by the use of 'bright'
- background colors. Until a solution is devised, it is advisable to stick
- with the basic 8 (dim) background colours in your ZTreeWin scheme.
-
- Q12:How do I start ZTreeWin in a specific directory (or the root)?
- A: ZTreeWin will start by default in the current directory (or the working
- directory of your shortcut). To start somewhere else, either make that
- directory current before loading ZTree (or change the working directory
- of your shortcut), or pass the desired pathname to ZTree as a command-line
- parameter (eg. ZTW C:\DOCS)
-
- Q13:Why doesn't the Free Memory display (under eXecute) match the MEM command?
- A: The MEM command displays memory available to the MS-DOS session running
- the command. ZTreeWin uses the Win32 API to display available SYSTEM
- memory.
-
- Q14:How do I view my .DBF files like I did in XTree?
- A: ZTreeWin comes with a 'native' .DBF viewer (ZdbView.exe) which is launched
- using the Open command. ZTreeWin's internal viewer does not provide
- 'formatted' viewing of special file types - for this, you will need the
- help of a third-party viewer program (see Q15).
-
-
- Q15:How do I use my .XYZ viewer from within ZTreeWin?
- A: ZTreeWin supports the use of external viewers and other applications
- via the use of the 'O'pen command. If the file you wish to open is
- a known file type for a registered (to Windows) application, there's
- nothing else to do - just highlight the file and hit 'O'pen.
-
- If on the other hand, the viewer is not registered to Windows, you must
- create a simple .BAT file named to match the file type you wish to use
- it for (eg. XYZ.BAT). The contents of this .BAT should specify the
- external viewer to run, with the necessary %1-%8 parameters to pass the
- current filename (see F1 help on Alt-Batch for the meaning of the % values).
-
- Q16:Can I use the XYZ viewer from my copy of XTreeGold (for DOS) from ZTreeWin?
- A: Yes, it is possible to make use of the graphics viewers from XTreeGold
- under ZTreeWin (others do not work sadly, as they are not runnable from a
- command prompt).
-
- As an example, here is how you can view Autocad .DWG files from ZTreeWin,
- using the XTreeGold v3.0 DWG viewer: (assumes ZTreeWin resides in C:\ZTREE)
-
- -Copy files EGAVGA.BGI, XTG_VGA.DRV & XTG_GDRV.XTP to C:\ZTREE
- -Copy XTG_GDWG.XTP to C:\ZTREE and rename to XTG_GDWG.EXE
- -Create a file in C:\ZTREE called DWG.BAT, the contents of which is:
- @C:
- @CD \ZTREE
- @XTG_GDWG.EXE %1 XTG_VIEW.TMP XTG_GDRV.XTP
- -Now, just highlight a .DWG file, and press 'o' (for open)
-
- Q17:How do I display long filenames?
- A: Either use a different Alt-F file display mode (or set permanently with
- Alt-F10), use Alt-I for extended file information, or press (R)ename
- to display the current name (and then Esc to cancel the function).
-
- Q18:When I Quit ZTree, I get a Windows error message.
- A: There are some cases where a video-related problem can cause a crash
- in 'WINOLDAP'. To avoid this, either set the window font in the ZTree
- shortcut from AUTO to a fixed size, or add /Y to the command line.
-
- Q19:Why are my files all displayed in different colors?
- A: ZTree adds the ability to color-code your files based on their name or
- attributes. Please refer to ZCOLORS.INI for information on customizing
- the colors. If you really hate it, just rename or delete ZCOLORS.INI!
-
- Q20:Why won't ZTree let me change the timestamp of a file to an odd number
- of seconds?
- A: This is a limitation of the file-system, which stores the seconds of a
- timestamp in a packed format as a multiple of 2.
-
- Q21:Does ZTreeWin work in DOS?
- A: No, ZTreeWin is a Win32 program, and will not run under Win32s with DOS.
-
- Q22:Can ZTreeWin be used safely with FAT32?
- A: Yes! ZTreeWin accesses devices only through the API, so it is fully
- compatible with FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS (and even HPFS under NT).
-
- Q23:Suddenly now, when I try to start ZTree, I get a message that says the
- program cannot be run.
- A: Under Win9x, make sure you still have a file called CONAGENT.EXE in the
- \Windows\System directory. Certain utilities think it's not needed!
-
- Q24:How did you get the source code for XTreeGold?
- A: I didn't! This is completely my own work. Of course, I take no credit for
- the most of the design (thanks Jeff!)
-
- Q25:What is ZTreeWin written in?
- A: ZTreeWin is about 55,000 lines of C code.
- Currently compiled with MS Visual C++ 6.0, under Windows XP Professional.
